Happy New Year!
I've been having camera and computer problems plus just not ready for doll making after the holidays, until now. The following dolls are Barbara Schoenoffs little Bloom and the Santa has a felted wool head which I did a pretty good job of felting.
Felting is something that needs a lot of practice and skill and can be difficult. I don't plan to do a lot more felti

ng however because I prefer to do cloth faces.

Nutcracker 2011

Here is Drew's nutcracker for this year. I will try to surprise him. I don't think he visits my blog so hopefully he won't see this for the next few days. I am very slow getting down to work on dolls these days. Hope I can start again with enthusiam soon.

Here is my interpretation of Anneal, Steampunk doll we made in class with Barbara Schoenoff last week-end. Can't wait to see what variety we will see of this doll from all the dollmakers who were there. I didn't even know what a steampunk doll was but think I produced a good example.

Enjoyed Deborah Pope's wet felting class and enjoyed the talented students who took the class. There were very nice animal heads created...I learned the technique and my cat head was not up to my standards but now I will try to make another one at home and maybe even a rabbit head. Deborah's felting art would be a better investment than the stock market. She is published all over the place and recently even went to Russia to teach.

This was really an interesting class from Adele S. site. It is called Street Fair and has different technique for hair, head, Ballon. It took me some time to get hair that I liked and finally settled for the peacock green. Never again tho' this color since it looked like grass! Thus, the hat to overcome that look....Cindee's dolls are fabulous I think and she does so many different things with this basic looking doll.

I love Cindee's dolls. Something new all the time. I will do the legs differently next time however. I will make an opening in the thigh to stuff through unstead fo the foot. I think Cindee is a genius with simple tricks. Her dolls are well designed and easily made. This is an online class Stree Scene thru Adele's site.

Hoffman doll 2011, House of Fairy Children

The Hoffman Challenge is a fabric challenge due July 15th for quilt, doll and accessories....The dolls must use a piece of Hoffman fabric in the making of the doll. The "houses" and wings are the Hoffman fabric on my doll. The dolls are judged and may be selected to travel in trunks to quilt shows around the US and Canada. It is always kind of stressful to come up with a concept for a doll or you can adapt patterns from designers or just do a certain pattern from a designer you like....I have adapted, Cindee Moyer, Gloria Bradford, and Salley Mavor's Wee Folk. The hat was from a Diane Evdokimoff's Dweedle the Clown. I have used my laser printed to put pictures in the window's and doors from old postcards.
Well the doll has been sent and was not selected for travel because the base was 8 1/2 inches instead of 7 inches....a disappointment but I can enjoy the doll here for the next year.

This Lady Bug wall hanging is from a Back Porch Pickins pattern.....a really wonderful pattern. Her head was gesso'ed and painted...the dress was painted and have lady bug dots on the top and sleeves and the arms and legs were painted with watered down acrylic pain....the flower & it's leaves are painted cloth and the stick is a real stick picked up at the park....she had painted lady bug wings with black dots as are her shoes.

After a month of recuperation from total knee replacement, I am slowly getting my desire to work on dolls again...my strengh just needs to come back now.....I made the body of this doll from Barbara Schoenoff, Pad de Deux body .....I love that pattern, especially the face..I had the doll body, undergarments already made for the Hoffman challenge and decided to go with a different doll for that challenge. I had this gorgeous table runner I had bought at an estate sale so the gown is made from from the velvet like material of the table runner. The runner had a woven gold thread brocade trim which was beautiful as well so that became the trim for the doll.

Getting a total knee replacement June 30th so am glad to have my Hoffman doll finished....! I have tried to cover the fan with modpodge to strenghten it....hope it works, since hopefully it will travel.

I am almost finished with the Hoffman Challenge Doll for 2010. I will probably make a few more changes...This is a Leslie Molen workshop doll from NIADA last year.....She has plastic insert eyes and her head is skinned....She has cloisonne buttons. She has horsehair braids.

The Gentleman is a club challenge. We were to use a particular fabric (Ruffled shoulder coat decoration around jacket sleeve). His walking stick has an ivory colored frog on the top of the stick. I made a mold of the frog and cast it. A new learning experience.!

What a wonderful online class! Dixie Redmond's Izannah Walker was very well done and included so much information from Dixie and the other students.....It is amazing what you can do with paper clay....I completely redid one doll's head by filing and adding more clay after I had completed it. The pattern of the clothes were well done as well....

I have now made and redone 3 17" dolls from the Izannah Walker,Dixie Redmond's online class and 3 dollie companions. This is the #4 Of the Izannah Walker dolls. This is better still and looks more like the original. Will work on dressing her today and then get a group shot.

Today I am working on Izannah Walker dolls again, trying to get a sweeter face. I've used the second head and it was much easier to sculpt but the stockinette covering was still difficult and probably will show the little seams. I am adding a picture of the last little Diane clown I made too.

I have been working for 2 weeks on 3 Izannah Walker Dolls in Dixie Redmond's workshop online. I haven't worked with sculpting before and this was very challenging. I just forged ahead and feel I learned a bit about sculpting with paperclay & painting a dolls face. I think you have to make these dolls over and over to get the hang of it....Here is my second doll which I completed once didn't like and redid the head. The little doll was the companion doll with a sculptured head as well.

First Izannah Walker Doll

I've named her Jane and she is my first sculpted, made to look, antique doll, inspired by a Izannah Walker Doll. I antiqued her body and head and it wasn't the best job but she is a keeper as is....
I hope she didn't mind but I gave her face a "better shape" and took away the antique wash. Her eyes were bulgy and her chin too big. It's great how you can redo anything on paper clay. I also changed one of the companion's face paint after it was finished. Here's Jane's new look.

Here are 3 dolls I am scupting with creative paperclay of the Izannah Walker doll pattern by Dixie Redmond. This is an online class. The class is a challenge and so far I am doing pretty good, I think although I have had doubts of my ability to do this but I am charging ahead and have learned a lot. It takes lots of time and I am no where near done there are arms and legs to make and gesso and more paint.......

This is a Mimi Winer pattern. I loved the body of this doll. She has a "combination" & a corset....It was a challenge to figure it all out....I did change the face.....I couldn't decide about the feathers on the hat but I think I like the pink best, it goes along better with her youth.

I love this pattern which Diane Little gave us in her class.....This is suppose to be a little clown. Until I pinned up her hat she looked like a little witch, I guess the colors helped too but now I hope she looks like a clown. Next time I will use white colored body fabric and more clown like colors.
I hope to learn a lot more this year about Doll Making. I will be taking the Izannah Walker class in January. Making these dolls is a therapy as well as a learning process, and just fun. It's a wonderful hobby.

Wet Felting was soooooooo much fun. It isn't that difficult to do a basic head. The problem is getting what you want from the head. It takes a lot of practive as most things. Deb is one of the best teachers and extremely giving in what she knows. I definately want to make another head. Here is my guy I did in class.

Trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn. NIADA

Bill and I had a great time at Gatlinburg. Bill was able to travel around and also do a little fishing. He had an adventure with a bear which was a little scary. There were several sightings of bears there. Some at NIADA campus. It was held at Arrowmont Art & Design and was a great place. A little problem for me walking on the hills. Tues and Wed. 9/2009, I took a two day workshop with Leslie Molen. She is a fun teacher and I learned a lot about putting in the eyes, free standing doll, sculping the face.....Here is Pearl Blossom, Li Hua.

March 7, 2009. This fairy house gave me lots of trouble. The pattern was like a jigsaw puzzle with bad directions on how it went together...A friend figured it out and it eventually it turned out very cute, just as I was about to put it in a drawer & forget about it. I used Tyvek for the roof and a hot air gun and that was a lot of fun.

Here is Moxie, my most recent doll. She is holding 3 little rag dolls. The pattern of Moxie is a Susan McMahon doll with a molded face. Challenge to paint but fun. A few of the members of the Dolling Dames met in Sand Spring and we worked on dolls and just enjoyed the day. February's meeting we will be showing a doll made of a particular color we drew from a hat. We will be choosing a doll that best represented that color. Recently my husband and I went to Branson, Mo. and went to a show. It is off season at Branson but my husband fished and I worked on doll bodies. Barbara Schoenoff will be coming in March and we can't wait. She is a wonderful doll maker and artist. Love her patterns, so well executed. Shirley

Barbara Schoenoff came to our doll club and taught us for two great days on Morris. He was certainly a fun project and the teacher and class were just excellent. I am very proud of my Morris. It's my best doll yet! Everyone had a wonderful time. Here also is my Dweedle doll which is my latest and I think she is very cute. She has a bug on her nose she is trying to catch in her net. This is # 2 Sporty Sam. I enlarged him 10%. It's funny how each doll takes on it's own look. Same Pattern too. This time I had a little trouble with the head. Arms and hands not nearly as much. Got in a rush and ended up getting paint on his leg so then had to paint his legs. Wow, learn so much by my mistakes. I thinks he's cute tho'. I made Linda Misa's Sporty Sam, (her free pattern). He was a challenge for me and I felt he turned out pretty well but I will make him again and see if I can do a little better. It was a learning experience. His shoes are HEARTY paper clay and fairly easy to make. He is only 10 1/2 inches tall.

Hardesty Library Display

Our Dolling Dames have a display at the Hardesty Library & altho the picture DOES NOT do justice to the beautiful dolls it is one event the club show to the community what art cloth dolls are about. The Hardesty display is how I learned about the doll club and shortly after joined this amazing group. I never thought I could make dolls like theirs but they assured me I could. I have been doing it now for over a year and have succeeded beyond what I thought I could do but there is still soooo much to learn. We will also show our dolls at the Tulsa State Fair.

This is a stump doll started for a Dolling Dames Project which I finished at home. I learned a lot at the Sat. playday last week-end. We learned more about how to make hand, wings and how to draw and color faces. The silk material came from Vietnam thanks to Tom our son-in-law who made a trip there for work. She was another doll which I struggled with and felt she was not going to work out but here she is and I think she turned out well.

I recently tried dying fabric except I dyed after the doll was stuffed and don't think that is the most appropriate way to dye! If I make mistakes I just feel like I can do something with it to fix it. Seems like that is how I work. Ha! I sometimes feel like maybe I should just give up on the doll and then she turns out to be a favorite. This is a Patti Culea Pattern and I used Dye na flow and dyed the fabric and body of the doll.
